Washington, Nov 7 - Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack (CA-45) today issued the following statement in opposition to the House Majority’s legislation to establish government-run health care:

“Americans deserve better than this 1,900-page flawed legislation that puts government squarely between patients and their doctors,” said Bono Mack. “Establishing government-run health care is the wrong approach and will fail to meet the health care needs of every day Americans.

“Rather than enacting meaningful reform that will fix what ails our health care system, this bill increases health care costs, raises taxes, and expands government bureaucracy.

“By ignoring problems within our health care system and putting the government, rather than patients and their doctors, in charge of personal health care decisions, this bill flies in the face of the Hippocratic oath my dad took as a young doctor, which says, ‘First do no harm.’ In fact, this bill does a tremendous amount of harm, inflicting an enormous burden on families and small businesses, raising health care costs, and adding over a trillion to our already massive national debt.

“In the guise of reform, this bill does away with the solid principles that have made our nation’s health care the best in the world. The American people have rightly rejected this legislation, and I will continue to work to ensure their voices are heard. Today, I supported real solutions that will make quality health care more affordable and more accessible to all Americans, without imposing a one-size-fits-all government plan.

“It is my hope that the Majority in Congress will take our nation’s health care needs seriously and heed the overwhelming cry of millions of Americans who stand opposed to a government takeover of our health care system.”
