Today, I had an interesting conversation with leaders and representatives of the National Hispanic Foundation for the Arts about how to help the arts and entertainment industries remain a vibrant part of our economy -- especially in California.
One thing we discussed of particular importance (especially in these tough economic times) is putting a stop to illegal downloading and counterfeiting. Piracy is costing Americans almost $250 billion in lost revenue and around 750,000 jobs a year! It's clear that to help this industry -- and keep jobs here in the US -- we need to take firm and comprehensive steps to address this issue. Intellectual property - the ideas of creators and innovators (such as musicians, actors and inventors) - is one of California and our nation's greatest assets, and we should do everything we can to protect these ideas and the thousands of jobs they represent. Our companies – from movie studios to manufacturers to family farms – can't stay competitive with the rest of the world if their products and ideas are stolen. It was a privilege to join members of the National Hispanic Foundation for the Arts to continue to raise awareness and find ways to deal with this very important issue. |
